How to Get Creatively Unstuck

Techniques to get creatively unstuck when you know you want to write but are struggling with motivation and follow-through.

Ever have a creative project lingering on your todo list, and you kinda want to do it, but you never get around to it, and you aren’t sure why. Something doesn’t feel right. I’ve had a couple insights recently that helped me and may help you. It’s just four simple questions.

  1. Is this creative project fun? If the thought of doing it feels like adding more labor in a labor-filled life, what would it take to shift the project so it feels fun? What’s the most fun version of doing this particular project?
  2. What are my values? What do I care about and how does my work help me move towards my values?
  3. What am I trying to accomplish? What’s my end goal?
  4. If I were to shift the public dialogue, what would I want people to think about differently?

I find that when I can answer these questions, however they pertain to my project, then I have some clarity and my ambivalence fades. Then I feel focused, powerful and excited to do my work. I hope this helps you too.
